A natural lustrous fiber spun by the silkworm , the larva of any of several species of moth. The domesticated silkworm belongs to the species Bombyx mori. The silkworm feeds on mulberry leaves and spins a cocoon consisting of one continuous filament, which can be more than a kilometer long. A single silk strand is made by lightly twisting together the filaments of several cocoons.
