A sensation produced in the brain by the action on the eardrum of air borne or other vibrations. Sources of sound consist usually of strings, membranes or air columns. In vibration per second of these the human ear can perceive sounds up to 16,000 decibels. The speed of sound in air at 15 degrees centigrade is about1,120 feet per second.
